Snub: verb meaning rebuff, ignore or spurn disdainfully.
The 63rd Grammys are right around the corner and this year is going to be the biggest one yet (according to the 4,389 promos currently running on CBS). Music’s biggest night has a common theme: the glitz, the glamour, the snubs.
This year was no exception. The very second the nominations were virtually announced, the snub debate started. The Weeknd had the single biggest song and album on the planet in 2020. That earned him exactly zero nominations causing him to tweet “The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency...”.
The Weeknd has won three Grammys in the past, however there are plenty of HUGE artists that have zero. So, as we ramp up to this year’s awards, we figured we’d take a look at the ten biggest artists’ who were rebuffed, ignored and spurned disdainfully.
SELENA GOMEZ
Selena is one of the most recognizable actresses and pop stars in the world. She’s racked up 336 various nominations and won 112 awards from the around the planet. The Grammys aren’t one of them. In fact, she’s never even been nominated.
KATY PERRY
Katy was the first female artist to have five #1 singles from a single album. Michael Jackson is the only other artist to achieve that in music history. Despite her 13 total nominations, Katy has yet to win a Grammy.
SNOOP DOGG
17: That’s the number of nominations Snoop has received over his career.
0: That’s his number of wins. He shares the record for most nominations without ever winning a Grammy with ……
BRIAN McKNIGHT
Ok, to be completely fair, Brian & Snoop still have hope. Let us introduce you to Morton Lindberg. You probably have never heard of him. He’s a sound engineer that collected 28 nominations before finally…. finally winning his first Grammy last year. In the meantime, his win meant that Brian & Snoop now share the dubious record.
KENNY CHESNEY
6 nominations, no wins. Pretty crazy considering his last concert tour played 40 stadiums and sold almost 1.3 million tickets. That was ONLY HIS LAST TOUR. Even if you don’t follow country music, Kenny is one of those household names that everyone knows. Kind of like….
BLAKE SHELTON
An original judge on “The Voice” has accumulated 8 nominations over his career. No wins. Even though Blake and Kenny are two of country music’s more mainstream stars, they don’t hold the genre’s record for most nominations without a win. That record is tied between Martina McBride and Dierks Bentley who each have 14.
RUN DMC
Run DMC is on a very unique list. Artists that have won lifetime achievement awards from the Recording Academy but, somehow, have never won an actual Grammy. They aren’t alone. Jimi Hendrix, The Ramones, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, The Beach Boys and Diana Ross are among other artists on that list.
TUPAC SHAKUR
Six nominations and no wins. Two of the artists that won categories in which 2Pac was nominated: Naughty By Nature and Coolio.
NOTORIOUS B.I.G.
An ironic twist to Biggie never winning a Grammy (despite having the first hip-hop album to sell 10 million copies) is that a song about him won one. “I’ll Be Missing You” by Puff Daddy, Faith Hill and 112 won a Best Rap Duo/Group Grammy in 1998.
BOB MARLEY
It’s seems almost insane that Bob Marley has only a single nomination tied to his name. That was in the Best Long Form Music Video category. “Rebel Music: The Bob Marley Story” got that nomination in 2002. Bob died in 1981.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
There are PLENTY of other BIG artists that have never won a Grammy. There are also others that weren’t even ever nominated. One Direction, The Spice Girls, The Who, Janis Joplin and Jason Derulo just to name a few.
